The collaboration between the Global Neighborhood for Media Innovation (GNMI) and the United States Department of State has ignited a long needed step that will pave the path for ecological restoration in the Southern Hindukush Range, that’s mostly in Pakistan’s province of Balochistan. Through the organization of a transformative 3-Day Sabz Journalism Environmental Journalism training in Quetta, led by senior environmental journalist Afia Salam, this initiative aims to empower mid-level journalists, digital content producers, and filmmakers actively engaged in climate-related reporting. Beyond enhancing journalistic skills, this workshop holds the potential to serve as a milestone in the quest for ecological restoration in one of Pakistan’s most ecologically diverse yet vulnerable regions.

Ecological Importance of Southern Hindukush Range, Balochistan

Geographically the Iranian platue ends up as Balochistan in East and same region is the Southern extension of Hindukush Range. Balochistan harbors a wealth of biodiversity and ecological significance. Its diverse landscapes, ranging from mountainous terrain to fertile Indus plains, provide vital habitats for a plethora of plant and animal species, many of which are endemic to the region. The Southern Hindukush Range serves as a crucial watershed, supplying water to rivers and streams that sustain local ecosystems and communities downstream. However, despite its ecological significance, this fragile ecosystem faces numerous threats, majorly deforestation, habitat degradation, Air pollution, and climate change-induced challenges.
